How Much Does a Website Cost in 2017?

This article will explore and break down all the price factors involved when setting up a UK-based website in 2017. Find out where to start and the costs involved in setting up and maintaining your site for the future.

Initial Costs

Domain Name

Every website needs a domain name, as it is this that needs to be typed into the address bar to gain access to the site.

Domain names need to be unique as two companies cannot share one name. A .co.uk or .biz are the cheapest options costing around £3 a year, whilst the more popular .com domain costs as much as £10 a year.

At the cheaper end of the scale, prices start at £0.99 for 12 months with sites like 123reg. However, domain names that are more popular will cost more due to the greater demand that comes with their associated popularity. If you are keen on a specific name that is already taken, you could potentially apply to buy it from whoever already owns it, but this may prove very costly.

Hosting

Every website needs to be hosted on a web server. Again there are free options available, via Google for example, but these are limited and not always reliable.

Hosting on a shared web server containing other sites usually costs around £10 a month. To have your own dedicated server is much more expensive with costs averaging around £150 a month. There are many other different forms of web hosting. The main hosting options are as follows:

  • Shared hosting: The cheapest form of web hosting. Shared hosting means you share your hosting platform with a number of other sites – therefore sharing the cost too. The downside is that you also share the bandwidth and you are, in effect, fighting for server space with other sites. Prices start from £10 a month.
  • Virtual Private Server (VPS) hosting: A VPS server is a good middle-ground between shared hosting and having your own dedicated server. A VPS is one physical server but allocates multiple, separate servers to its sites. This way you avoid the problems associated with shared hosting. Prices range between £40 – £150 a month.
  • Dedicated hosting: For the largest and most complicated websites. With dedicated hosting, you are not dependent on any external factors and the service is much more reliable. Of course, with greater reliability comes higher prices. Prices can start from £150 a month.

With sites like 123reg, 1and1 and GoDaddy you can get regular promotional hosting packages that also include free domain names if you don’t already have one. Currently, GoDaddy offers a free domain when you buy an annual hosting package which can start from as little as £2.99 per month.
